Long BeachCalifornia 10251 Contract On-Site Accepting Candidates
Technicon Design is seeking skilled Fabricators for an opportunity in the southern Los Angeles area. The role will be on-site in a collaborative lab/shop environment.

The Prototype Fabricator/Composite Technician will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of advanced composite components and vehicle structures. This role involves utilizing expertise in carbon fiber and fiberglass fabrication to create high-quality, lightweight prototypes for the next generation of electric vehicles.

Job Functions:
  • Read, interpret, and build to blueprints, 3D CAD models, and engineering drawings.
  • Perform precision wet layup and vacuum bagging of carbon fiber and fiberglass components.
  • Prepare, clean, and treat molds utilizing appropriate release agents, waxes, and semi-permanent coatings.
  • Select, mix, and apply appropriate resin systems (epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester) based on engineering specifications, ensuring proper resin-to-fiber ratios.
  • Expertly apply vacuum bagging consumables, including peel ply, breather, bleeder, and sealant tape to ensure high-quality part consolidation.
  • Utilize handheld power and pneumatic tools for trimming, sanding, and finishing composite parts (grinders, sanders, Dremels, etc.).
  • Perform secondary bonding of composite-to-composite and composite-to-metal structures using structural adhesives.
  • Operate shop equipment such as waterjets, bandsaws, and table saws for material preparation and template creation.
  • Execute assigned fabrication tasks independently, meeting quality standards and deadlines, while adhering to established safety processes (PPE, vapor mitigation, and dust control).

Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in composite fabrication (Carbon Fiber and Fiberglass).
  • Deep understanding of vacuum bagging processes, including bag plumbing and troubleshooting vacuum leaks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of composite materials, including various weaves (plain, twill, satin) and core materials (honeycomb, foam).
  • Proficiency in resin chemistry, including accurate mix ratios, catalyst percentages, pot-life management, and ambient temperature curing requirements.
  • Proficient layout and measurement skills utilizing calipers, tape measures, and fixturing tools.
  • High attention to detail and organization, particularly regarding clean-room standards and resin shelf-life tracking.
  • Physical job requirements:
    • Ability to lift 50+ lbs consistently.
    • Stand for long periods of time, bend or twist body, kneel, stoop, or crouch.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with complex mold geometries and multi-part tooling.
  • General knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Experience operating CNC equipment (e.g., waterjet, laser cutter) for precision ply cutting.
  • Basic proficiency in MIG/TIG welding and metal fabrication to assist in multi-material prototype assemblies.
