Technicon Design US is hiring a highly experienced Senior Vehicle Travel Technician to support our client in the Bay Area of California. The primary worksite will be located just northwest of Phoenix, Arizona.
The Senior Vehicle Travel Technician provides expert, hands-on support for electric vehicle (EV) beta/prototype modifications across multiple locations, including Michigan, Arizona, and overseas. This role independently executes complex electrical integration, vehicle harness build/modification, chassis rework, and minor fabrication with little to no guidance. The technician partners closely with engineering teams to implement changes quickly and correctly, ensures vehicles are left in a safe and functional condition, maintains clean and safe workspaces, and trains other teams to enable repeatable, high-quality execution.
Job Functions:
- Lead and execute EV beta/prototype vehicle modifications with minimal direction in fast-changing development environments.
- Interpret and apply wiring schematics, pinouts, connector views, and routing documentation to on-vehicle implementation.
- Produce vehicle harnesses and sub-harnesses; modify and repair harnessing (splicing, de-pin/re-pin, connector repair, shielding/grounding, strain relief, looming, labeling).
- Modify electrical components and wiring to support prototype changes, packaging constraints, and test needs.
- Diagnose and resolve electrical issues using standard diagnostic methods/tools; document findings and corrective actions.
- Support electrified vehicle systems where applicable; follow high-voltage safety practices, PPE requirements, and site procedures (within training/authorization limits).
- Perform chassis/mechanical modifications (mounting solutions, routing changes, fit/finish adjustments, serviceability improvements).
- Complete minor fabrication work as needed (e.g., bracketry, drilling/cutting, fastening, rivnuts/riveting, trim/panel rework).
- Ensure vehicles are returned in a safe, functional, and test-ready condition after work completion (secure fasteners, correct routing, verified electrical integrity).
- Perform post-work quality/safety checks (connector engagement, harness retention, abrasion/heat protection, basic functional verification).
- Identify unsafe conditions or quality risks; stop work and escalate concerns as required.
- Partner with engineers to clarify requirements, provide hands-on feedback, and recommend practical build solutions.
- Document “as-built” status, deviations, and lessons learned; contribute to work instructions, checklists, and standard work.
- Train and mentor technicians/teams on procedures, wiring best practices, safety expectations, and workmanship standards.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas (5S mindset), including tool control and housekeeping; follow all safety/PPE requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- Significant hands-on experience in prototype/beta vehicle builds, vehicle modification, or advanced automotive technician work (EV experience strongly desired).
- Demonstrated ability to read and follow wiring schematics and execute complex wiring/harness work, including harness build and modification.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently with little to no guidance and limited documentation.
- Mechanical aptitude with ability to perform chassis modifications and minor fabrication work.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety-critical workmanship and leaving vehicles in safe, functional condition.
- Willingness to travel frequently to support builds and test events in Michigan, Arizona, and overseas locations.
- Valid driver’s license (as applicable).
Preferred Qualifications:
- High-voltage (HV) experience and/or HV safety training for electrified vehicles (preferred).
- Experience supporting R&D, prototype, or pre-production EV programs.
- Familiarity with automotive connectors/terminals, crimp standards, shielding/grounding practices, and harness protection/labeling.
- Experience creating work instructions and training materials; demonstrated mentoring capability.
Competencies / Skills:
- Ability to lead execution independently and prioritize work effectively
- Strong attention to detail and high workmanship standards
- Safety-first mindset; able to identify hazards and mitigate risk
- Clear written and verbal communication with engineering and cross-functional teams
- Adaptability and problem solving in ambiguous environments
- Training/mentoring capability
Travel Requirements:
- Frequent travel required; locations may include Michigan, Arizona, and overseas (international travel).
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
- Hands-on shop and vehicle environment; standing, bending, kneeling, and tool use required.
- Ability to lift typical shop loads (often up to 50 lbs with assistance as needed).
- Work may include off-shift, weekend, or extended hours during build/test events.
- Work may involve energized systems; must follow EV/HV electrical safety practices and PPE requirements.
Pay Range: $65 - $75 per hour
**US work authorization is required.**
