Automotive Design Painter

Technicon Design are looking for a Design Painter with experience in the Automotive industry
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Design Painter to join our clients design team and play a critical role in the preparation, mixing, and development of high-quality paint finishes for concept models, prototype vehicles, and design surfaces.
Working closely with Designers, Modellers, and Colour & Materials teams, you will ensure physical design models accurately represent intended colours, finishes, and visual effects. Your expertise will help influence and refine design decisions through exceptional finish execution and evaluation.
This is a hands-on, specialist position requiring advanced craftsmanship, extensive technical knowledge of automotive paint systems, and a passion for delivering premium-quality results.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, mix, and apply high-quality paint finishes to concept models, prototype vehicles, and design surfaces.
- Develop and match complex colours, finishes, and visual effects to design specifications.
- Collaborate with Design, Modelling, and Colour & Materials teams to achieve design intent.
- Evaluate, refine, and troubleshoot paint and surface finishing challenges.
- Maintain paint equipment, materials, and consumables to the highest standards.
- Ensure all finished surfaces meet exceptional presentation and quality requirements.
- Establish and promote finishing best practices and quality standards across the team.
- Support the development of future vehicle designs through expert finish assessment and delivery.
- Mentor and share knowledge with junior team members where required.
Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in paint application and surface finishing within automotive, design studio, prototype, or high-end bespoke environments.
- Proven ability to prepare and finish surfaces to premium presentation standards.
- Advanced expertise in colour mixing, matching, and formulation of complex finishes.
- 5–10 years' experience managing paint equipment, materials, maintenance, and quality control processes.
- Strong understanding of automotive paint systems and finishing techniques.
- Experience resolving complex finishing and material-related challenges.
